Q&A
Questions and Answers
Regarding PRO-FILE Professional File System
This documentation has been provided as a means of support and
instruction to aid you in solving both casual and urgent problems
and to answer questions not mentioned in the PRO-FILE documentation.
If you can not find the answer here, then please by all means,
contact me, Steve Barber, and I'll be glad to help. Furthermore,
all reported problems will be placed in this file and released in
future versions.
CASUAL INQUIRIES
----------------
Q: When I try to generate a master listing (Alt-T), PRO-FILE won't
-- do anything. I also noticed that option was darkened on the main
menu. What do I need to do?
A: The Alt-T option is darkened because you have an un-registered
-- version. The generation of master listings is a registration
bonus and will become active upon registration.
Q: I have set up PRO-FILE to generate a master listing and place it
-- in an area for users to download. I also have a zipped version
compiled and added to the database by a disk update (Alt-K) along
with it (See AutoDriv.Lst), but PRO-FILE puts both the
AllFiles.Lst and AllFiles.Ans in the directory and the disk
update picks up the AllFiles.Ans, and I don't want that in the
listings.
A: The solution is simple. Just delete the file AllFiles.ANS from
-- disk before performing the disk update.
Q: Is there any way to use PRO-FILE remotely?
--
A: Not really. PRO-FILE has no direct support for remote use.
-- However, if there is a high demand, remote support will be
included in future versions. For now, if you absolutely must
use PRO-FILE remotely, you can use a program such as PC-Anywhere
or other full-fledged gateway program.
PROBLEMS
--------
Q: I deleted a file a few days ago and now PRO-FILE won't let me
-- recover "un-delete" the file information.
A: You waited to long to recover the file. Un-Deletes should be
-- performed soon after you delete the file. If you did not delete
the file from disk, then just add the file again.
Q: I used PRO-FILE to add a few files areas, and I changed my file
-- menu to show the new areas, and users can list the file lists,
but they can't upload or download from the new areas.
A: When PRO-FILE adds a file area, it doesn't set the security level
-- for up/downloads. It will use the default security levels
RAConfig uses. But, in this rare occasion, you must use RAConfig
to set the up/download security levels for the new areas.
Q: I added a file area with PRO-FILE, and all looks good in PRO-
-- FILE, but now my BBS file menu doesn't show the new area.
A: Any time you add or delete a file area with PRO-FILE, it will
-- take care of all necessary changes except the file menu. You
must manually add the option to list the new area using RAMenu.
Q: I just removed a whole area, but I didn't remove the area's files
-- from disk because I thought I might want to recover the area.
Now I need to recover the area's file information. I noticed the
area letter in PRO-FILE is gone though. How do I do this?
A: As stated in the docs, when you remove a whole area, the file
-- information is completely removed from the database almost like
what a Pack Database (Alt-P) does. Thus, you can not recover the
file area. However, if the physical files themselves are still
on disk, you can do a Disk Update (Alt-K), and PRO-FILE will add
the files again. However, some of the information such as the
description, rating, and download count will have been reset.
Q: When I did a disk update (Alt-K), it added all the files in the
-- directory, but I have some files in the directory I don't want
added such as sysop only files uploaded by users.
A: Go ahead and use a disk update and then delete the unwanted files
-- using the Global by Area (Alt-L) command.
Q: I've got a lot of new files in a particular area, and PRO-FILE
-- has never added them. What should I do?
A: It is likely that either the path to the file area that's always
-- missed is wrong, or, you have specified for only one area to be
searched for new files. If the latter is the case, then use the
SetUp (Alt-U) option to change the search for all areas;
otherwise, check the path(s) to the missed areas.
Q: I'm still using FileDoor and am having trouble with PRO-FILE not
-- picking up the download count and uploader.
A: PRO-FILE does support FileDoor, but you must set FileDoor up a
-- specific way for the two to be compatible. First, make sure
FileDoor is writing a log to your main RA log file. Next, find
out what style it is using (OPUS/FRONTDOOR). Last, be sure to
use the Alt-U Set-Up option in PRO-FILE to re-configure PRO-FILE.
UNANTICIPATED PROBLEMS
----------------------
** These problems have not actually occurred, but in the event that
they do, these solutions should fix the problem.
Q: I made some updates to the areas and files, and for some reason,
-- when PRO-FILE exited, it didn't update all the area lists. Now
how do I get the other area lists generated?
A: Use the Alt-G Generate Areas Listings command and select the
-- option to generate all area file lists.
